![]() Any further attempt at stretching becomes counter productive and may even cause long term damage. Once the reflex is activated, your body has effectively said “no more” and resists the stretch. Any movement that goes too fast or too far, or is held for too long, will cause your body to resist with the stretch reflex. This nervous energy, known as the stretch reflex, is our body’s automatic defense against the dangers of over-stretching. The method rests on the notion that changing and re-educating our muscle’s nervous energy is a major factor in unleashing our body’s intended function. Rather than creating soreness by pulling on our limbs to extremes, the Stretch Zone Method ® works through the nervous system to achieve lasting gains in flexibility and range of motion. By re-educating the associated nerve-muscle reflex, the Stretch Zone Method ® leads to movement becoming easier and more efficient. The goal is not to make a person more “flexible” or “elastic,” but rather enable you to move more functionally by re-establishing a more ideal resting muscle tone. This is achieved by dealing with the muscle’s nervous tension (“tonus”) to reach an optimal active range of motion. Finally, the notes for each track conclude with a detailed description of the context of the event, and hence the recording. You can then build up from there, like you could for other graphics. Starting with some basic things like a single single column, row, etc. You can control a dwarven outpost or an adventurer in a randomly generated, persistent world. Dwarf Fortress Classic is an ASCII-based single-player fantasy game by Bay 12 Games. No complaints about a single photo – and the book contains over 400! A true photographer or graphic designer studying it with a magnifying lens might be more particular about how their images were reproduced, but to my (somewhat picky) naked eye, which you know has a lot of opinions about undertones and lighting, they definitely look great. The photo-wrapped cover and the insides all met my standards for color and crispness, despite BookWright warning me that many of the iPhone photos included were too low resolution. In fact, I like how Blurb’s spine was a little sharper than MyPublisher’s – although maybe that’s the difference of it being 15 pages shorter. So some of my pages ended up being a little more closely cropped than I would’ve liked, but now that I know how to activate that feature it won’t happen again.Īgain, I’m no printing aficionado, but I found no discernable difference between Blurb and MyPublisher’s final product. It also wasn’t quite as easy to swap photos around and I didn’t discover until AFTER I ordered our book that you can turn on the “trim area” guides (the purple border below pops up to help you prevent any text or faces from getting trimmed off). It was pretty slim on preset photo layouts, but you can save your own custom templates to easily solve that. Theirs is called BookWright and it had fewer bells and whistles, but also performed much faster (it used to take me FOREVER to upload all of my pictures into the MyPublisher software). Like MyPublisher, Blurb allows you to download free software to lay out your book offline. Without discounts, I would have spent LESS THAN HALF of what MyPublisher would’ve charged (around $60 versus $130). Blurb’s discount codes didn’t seem to be quite as generous (I got one by email that saved me 30%) but their base pricing was much cheaper. We always used their max of 99 pages, which one year could’ve cost me nearly $130, so I always waited to order our album until their “Free Extra Pages” promotion came around, saving me about $80. A lot of our cost for MyPublisher was paying for extra pages. ![]() The final price of my Blurb book ended up being around $43, which is about $5 less than what I typically spent for our MyPublisher albums, but I did use 15 fewer pages this year so it’s admittedly not a perfect apples-to-apples comparison. So we’re glad to have found something that allows us to keep building on the same pile. I know this seems like a weird thing to obsess over, but part of the fun of making these books has been watching the stack grow. It’s about an inch and a half less wide too, but you can’t usually tell that when they’re stored flat like this (or leaned vertically now that I think about it) since that’s in the back anyway. Sizeįor starters, the spine of their Standard Landscape Photo Book measures just 1/2″ shorter than the old standard size from MyPublisher we used to order, meaning it stacks really naturally on top of our existing collection (it’s the one with the yellow spine below). We paid for our book and waited impatiently on the front porch just like everyone else. And this isn’t a sponsored post or anything like that (they don’t know us from Adam). So just based on all of your feedback, and a bit of poking around on a few websites, we opted to try Blurb. I can’t speak to how it stacks up to the other suggestions (since all we have to compare it to are our MyPublisher albums), but I can say for anyone else who is familiar with MyPublisher and their quality and varied photo-layouts, it’s a pretty close match. After weighing all of them, we noticed that Blurb seemed to be recommended the most often (closely followed by Mixbook) and Shutterfly was often mentioned but seemed to be polarizing (many people chimed in to say they tried it and didn’t like it). And judging by the response from you guys, we weren’t the only ones who were upset to see them close up shop last spring.īut we got TONS of suggestions from you guys (hundreds of recommendations on Instagram and Facebook when we asked what you used and liked) and many of the more common suggestions included Blurb, Mixbook, Artifact Uprising, and Shutterfly (the service MyPublisher was absorbed into). We’re no experts on photo printing services by any means, but after becoming dedicated users of MyPublisher for YEARS (we purchased our first annual album from them back in 2011) we had become pretty accustomed to their service and (more importantly) had built a nice uniform stack as each year passed. But now that 2018 is here, we’ve officially added our 2017 album to the stack and we are VERY happy with the result. ![]() Ever since MyPublisher shut down last year, one of the most frequent questions we’ve been getting is “ who are you going to use to make your family photo book now?” For months and months, we had no good answer because we only print these annual “family yearbooks” in January, once the previous year has wrapped up ( you can see examples of them here). ![]() # loaded via a namespace (and not attached): ![]() # stats graphics grDevices utils datasets methods base # LAPACK: /System/Library/Frameworks/amework/Versions/A/Frameworks/amework/Versions/A/libLAPACK.dylib # BLAS: /System/Library/Frameworks/amework/Versions/A/Frameworks/amework/Versions/A/libBLAS.dylib # Running under: macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 It’s debatable whether the used to define a footnote is really code, but for our purposes treating it like code will ensure that our footnotes work in the final output: This will ensure that Pandoc doesn’t alter the ‘code’ in the backticks at all. To do this, just enclose any text with backticks ( `) and then put immediately after the closing backtick. ![]() Pandoc allows you to tag both code chunks and inline code with a special raw attribute which will ensure they’re passed on to the output format unmodified. This is a known issue with Pandoc (see this issue on GitHub) so it will eventually get fixed, but in the meantime I’ve come up with a workaround. Unfortunately for us, we want our square brackets to be treated as special characters and not turned into text. ![]() When Pandoc sees them in the process of converting from standard Markdown to GitHub-Flavored Markdown, it (logically) decides that they’re important content and preserves them by escaping them with a backslash so they’re preserved in the GitHub-Flavored Markdown. The square braces that set off a footnote are metacharacters in Markdown, since they’re used to construct links (among other things, like citations with pandoc-citeproc). Pandoc is the source of our problems here. md file and converts it to whatever output format you want. First, the knitr package runs all of the code in your. Understanding what’s happening here (and thus how to fix it) requires a slightly detailed explanation of what exactly happens when you hit that Knit button in RStudio. The content of the footnote does appear at the bottom of the page, but it lacks the footnote formatting so it just looks like regular text and there’s no link to click and return to the footnote’s place in the text. When Jekyll converts the Markdown file to HTML, you end up with a sad lonely unclickable where your footnote should go. This footnote will appear at the bottom of the page. R Markdown lets you use a LaTeX-esque syntax for defining footnotes:ġ. The ‘standard’ method for adding footnotes in R Markdown is actually a bit of a cheat compared to the method in the official Markdown specification. My recent post on using SQL style filtering to preprocess large spatial datasets before loading them into memory needed a whopping six footnotes, so I finally had to sit down and figure it out. My solution thus far has been to just avoid footnotes and lean heavily on parenthetical asides when I’m using R Markdown to generate a page. Rmd file, they end up mangled and not actually footnotes in the final HTML page. One thing has consistently eluded me, however: footnotes.Įvery time I try to include footnotes in my. As others and I have written before, it’s pretty easy to use R Markdown to generate pages with R code and output all together. Jekyll converts Markdown files into the HTML that your browser renders into the pages you see. I’m leaving the original post up below in case anyone who has an even weirder use case than me might find it helpful, or if any of my students ever stumble across this page and don’t believe that I’m still constantly learning, too. md files that aren’t hundreds of columns wide. As a side benefit, you can drop the -wrap=preserve flag and end up with. Rmd files like me, all you need to do is add +footnotes to the end of of the variant: gfm line in your YAML header. If you’re running pandoc from the command line all you need to do is add -t gfm+footnotes to your pandoc command. Since standard markdown natively supports footnotes when used as an output format, I didn’t even think to look into manually enabling them for GitHub-Flavored Markdown. The documentation notes that you can add extensions to output formats they don’t normally support. Update: John MacFarlane helpfully pointed out that this is all incredibly unnecessary because pandoc makes it easy to add support for footnotes to GitHub-Flavored Markdown. |
